Common Questions

What is the Life in the UK Test?

It is a computer-based test you must pass to apply for settlement (indefinite leave to remain) or British citizenship. You answer 24 multiple-choice questions in 45 minutes at an official test centre, and you need 18 correct (75%) to pass.

What is the test based on?

Every question comes from the official handbook, “Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents” (3rd edition). It covers British values and principles, what the UK is, history, modern society, and government and the law. BritainTest lets you practise the full handbook so nothing catches you off guard.

How much does the test cost and how do I book it?

The official test costs £50 per attempt and is booked online at gov.uk at least 3 days in advance at one of over 30 test centres. BritainTest is separate study software that helps you get ready before you book.

How many times can I retake the test?

There is no limit. If you do not pass, you can book again, but you must wait at least 7 days between attempts and pay the £50 fee each time. Practising here first helps you pass sooner.

Does this replace the official handbook?

No, and it is not meant to. BritainTest is built for daily practice and review based on the official material. It is an independent study tool and is not affiliated with the Home Office or the UK Government.

Can I practise on a phone?

Yes. BritainTest runs in any browser, so you can study on your phone during a commute or break and pick up right where you left off on your computer.

What does premium access include?

Premium unlocks everything you need to prepare: the full question library, timed mock exams, automatic mistake review, flashcards, and progress tracking, all in one place.
